Those looking for true vintage lingerie often stumble upon a few issues in their search for the perfect pieces; Vintage lingerie comes up small, often very small. Women were generally smaller in the 1940’s and 1950s’. This means that if you do come across the perfect piece, you’ve then got to hope it’s the correct size for you. The average UK dress size is now somewhere around a UK14~16, you’d be extremely lucky to find the perfect piece in your size. Another issue is deterioration. Elastane doesn’t last forever; garments lose their stretch over many many decades. The elastic can go brittle and stretch but never return to its original size.
With these issues in mind, it can often be much easier to buy true vintage loungewear and nightwear, rather than lingerie and shapewear. Loungewear such as robes, night gowns, bed jackets can be much easier to size correctly and often found in wonderful condition. Not to mention, you’re bound to end up with something endlessly more glam than anything on the high street, when did you last see a hand embroidered kimono sleeved silk bed jacket for well under £100?
So days and hours of internet searching have paid off and you’ve found the perfect true vintage piece of loungewear, or loungerie. But now you’re looking for some reproduction vintage lingerie to wear alongside your true vintage pieces?
We’ve teamed several of our biscotti ranges with our favourite vintage bed jacket for you to see exactly how they complement and can be worn alongside each other. This peach biscotti colour was very popular in the 1940’s and 1950's as black lingerie was not yet in fashion.
